In a bizarre marriage scam in Uttar Pradesh’s Banda, a woman and her accomplices have been arrested for deceiving single men by pretending to marry them and then stealing their valuables. Poonam Mishra, along with Sanjana Gupta, Vimalesh Verma, and Dharmendra Prajapati, were caught after swindling multiple victims.

According to the police, Poonam would pose as the bride while Sanjana acted as her mother. The two men, Vimalesh and Dharmendra, would find unsuspecting targets and introduce them to Poonam, asking for a payment of Rs 1.5 lakh for matchmaking services. Following a simple court wedding, Poonam would visit the groom’s home, steal jewelry and cash, and escape.

The group had successfully carried out six such scams before attempting to trick Shankar Upadhyay. He had been looking for a bride and was approached by Vimalesh, who convinced him to spend Rs 1.5 lakh on the marriage. At the court, Upadhyay became suspicious and requested identification documents from Poonam and Sanjana, sensing foul play. When he refused to proceed with the wedding, they threatened him with death and false charges.

Shiv Raj, the Additional Police Superintendent of Banda, stated that the police acted swiftly upon receiving the complaint, leading to the arrest of the suspects. The investigation continues as authorities work to uncover more details of the scam.
