A shocking video of women precariously hanging from the footboard of an overpacked Mumbai local train has gone viral, reigniting concerns about commuter safety, especially for women. The disturbing incident occurred Monday morning on a Ladies Special local from Kalyan, which was delayed by 40 minutes during rush hour. The late arrival led to severe overcrowding, with commuters desperately trying to board. In the viral footage, women are seen clinging to the footboard, struggling to secure a spot inside as the train speeds along.

Another video shared on X by @mumbairailusers showed a woman risking her life by hanging from the outside of a moving train, generating outrage and alarm across social media

Many regular travelers, particularly working women, described this as a daily reality rather than a rare event.

“Despite frequent warnings from authorities about the hazards of footboard travel, delays and a lack of alternatives force us into dangerous situations,” said one commuter.

“We don’t want to endanger ourselves, but we have no other choice.”

The troubling footage has been forwarded to senior railway officials, including:

  • @DrmMumbaiCR (Divisional Railway Manager)
  • @RPFCR (Railway Protection Force)

Officials have acknowledged the concern but prompt action is still awaited.

Social media has been flooded with reactions:

  • “Commuting shouldn’t feel like a risk to life.”
  • “When will this crisis end?”

This incident underscores the urgent need for safer and more efficient public transportation in Mumbai.
