Women in Pune are joining forces every week as part of the “Meri Raatein, Meri Sadakein” movement, a campaign aiming to reclaim public spaces at night and stand against violence towards women. Inspired by similar initiatives, the movement has gathered hundreds of women on streets and footpaths every week since September 21, 2024, marking the 12th anniversary of the Nirbhaya tragedy.
The gatherings feature women speaking out on issues like harassment, singing songs, and sharing personal stories. The movement emphasizes that streets should be safe and accessible to all, regardless of gender. The campaign also highlights historical figures like Savitribai Phule and Rajmata Jijau, celebrating women’s contributions to society.
The program, organized by the “Mahila Jagar Samiti,” promotes empowerment and solidarity, with events including cultural performances and exhibitions showcasing powerful women. The last gathering will take place on December 15, 2024, following a series of impactful street programs.
