A young woman in her mid-20s recently approached a women’s helpline seeking assistance after facing persistent pressure from her mother-in-law to have a child, despite the couple’s decision to delay parenthood.
According to counsellors associated with the Abhayam women’s helpline, the woman had been married for about two years. The couple had mutually decided to wait before starting a family until the husband secured stable employment.
However, the decision reportedly did not sit well with the mother-in-law, who began insisting that the couple conceive immediately.
Constant pressure over pregnancy
Counsellors said the woman reported that the pressure soon became overwhelming. The mother-in-law allegedly began closely monitoring her menstrual cycle and frequently asked for personal details about the couple’s relationship in order to identify what she believed were the best days for conception.
Despite repeated requests to stop the interference, the situation continued, causing emotional stress for the young woman.
“The family is financially stable, but currently no one has a job,” a counsellor explained. “The husband is preparing for government recruitment examinations, and the couple had planned to start a family after he secured employment.”
The woman reportedly left the house due to the continuous pressure and stayed away from the family home for nearly a year.
Mother-in-law’s fears and counselling intervention
When the woman returned home about two weeks ago, the pressure to conceive reportedly resumed, prompting her to reach out to the helpline for support.
During counselling, the mother-in-law shared that her concerns were influenced by her own experience. She said she and her husband had conceived only after 20 years of marriage following prolonged medical treatment and religious prayers.
Fearful that her daughter-in-law might face similar difficulties if she delayed pregnancy, the mother-in-law reportedly insisted that the couple should try for a child immediately, assuring them that the family would manage the financial responsibilities.
However, counsellors noted that the concern had turned into excessive interference in the couple’s private life.
Following counselling sessions with both parties, the mother-in-law assured officials that she would respect the couple’s decision and would not pressure the young woman further.
Experts say such cases highlight the importance of respecting personal choices and reproductive decisions within families, emphasising that emotional support and open communication are essential for maintaining healthy relationships.
