Police are investigating the death of a 21-year-old youth who allegedly died by suicide in Pasiapur village under the limits of Soraon police station, following a disagreement with his girlfriend over elopement.
The incident occurred on December 29 and has brought attention to the emotional distress and impulsive decisions often linked to relationship pressures among young adults.
Dispute over elopement led to tragedy
According to police, the deceased had been in a relationship with a minor girl and was allegedly pressuring her to elope with him. However, the girl refused, stating that while her family had agreed to their marriage, she wanted to wait until her elder sister’s marriage was solemnised.
DCP (Ganga Nagar) Kuldeep Singh told police that the girl approached authorities and explained the circumstances leading up to the incident. She said the youth had insisted that she meet him near a canal road on the evening of December 29.
Repeated calls before the incident
Police revealed that the couple used to speak frequently over the phone. On the day of the incident, the youth reportedly made more than 100 calls to the girl, urging her to meet him. When she did not turn up, he allegedly took the extreme step and died by hanging.
Girlfriend found the body, fled the scene
Officials said that after learning about the youth’s whereabouts, the girl went to the spot and found him hanging. She reportedly brought the body down but fled the scene out of fear. Meanwhile, family members of the youth, who had been searching for him, reached the location and informed the police.
The body was sent for post-mortem examination, which confirmed hanging as the cause of death.
Police continue probe
Police have registered a case and stated that all aspects of the incident are being examined. Officers said the investigation is focused on understanding the sequence of events and ensuring there was no external pressure or foul play involved.
The incident has once again highlighted the need for emotional support systems, counselling, and awareness among young people to help them cope with rejection, stress, and relationship-related conflicts.
