Kalaburagi: A new initiative under the KKRDB’s macro scheme is set to enhance the value of Kalaburagi’s GI-tagged tur dal by introducing grading, packaging, and branding. This move aims to secure better prices for farmers by attracting traders willing to pay a premium.

The primary goal is to empower farmers by allowing them to determine their own prices and sell directly from their farms. To support those struggling to find buyers post-branding, the NGO Krush Kalpa will assist in connecting them with traders based on product quality.

In the pilot phase, 11 gram panchayats across Kalaburagi, Sedam, Afzalpur, and Chittapur taluks have been selected. Advanced grading machines will be used to process multiple crops, including green gram, jowar, chickpeas, and urad, ensuring better classification and pricing.

The agriculture department will supply branded bags with quality markers in 25kg and 50kg sizes, reducing farmers’ need to seek traders or handle transport costs. A nominal fee will be charged for grading and branding services.

Kalaburagi Agriculture Joint Director Samad Patel confirmed KKRDB’s approval of the project, with a strategic plan currently in progress. KKRDB Chairman Ajay Singh stated that evaluations are underway, with further details to be disclosed upon finalization.

This initiative promises a significant boost to farmers’ income, ensuring market stability and greater financial independence.
