Kalaburagi: Regional Imbalance Redressal Committee Chairman, Prof. M. Govinda Rao, emphasized the need for collective efforts from various organizations to eradicate backwardness in the region. Despite thousands of crores being allocated as per the Dr. D.M. Nanjundappa Committee recommendations, several taluks remain underdeveloped.
Highlighting the private sector’s crucial role, he stressed that Kalyana Karnataka and Kittur Karnataka lag behind in education, healthcare, and per capita income compared to Bengaluru and coastal Karnataka. The committee will propose recommendations to bridge this gap.
Challenges in the Region:
- High Maternal and Child Mortality: Dr. Suryanarayana Mungil Hillemani pointed out the shortage of doctors and poor hospital infrastructure in Kalyana Karnataka.
- Lack of Basic School Facilities: 34 schools in Chittapur taluk lack toilets, discouraging parents from sending their daughters to schools in Yadrami, Kalagi, Chincholi, and Sedam.
- Failure in Fund Utilization: Former KKCCI president Umakanth Niggudagi stated that despite Article 371-J granting special status, KKRDB has failed to effectively use Rs 5,000 crore allocated.
Proposed Solutions:
- A separate industrial policy for the region.
- A global investors’ meet in Kalaburagi to attract industries.
- Support for tur growers and better fund allocation for Kalaburagi under Niti Aayog’s backward districts scheme.
- Encouragement for Dal Mills and establishment of government offices in newly formed taluks.
The lack of political will, bureaucratic negligence, and weak community participation continue to hinder progress. Leaders are calling for urgent action to uplift the region.
