An 18-year-old medical aspirant who had recently appeared for the NEET-UG examination allegedly died by suicide in Karnataka’s Kalaburagi district, police said.
The student, identified as Bhagyashree, had scored 92 per cent in her PUC examinations and had appeared for the NEET exam on May 2.
Student found hanging at apartment
According to police officials, Bhagyashree allegedly died by suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan inside her apartment.
Police visited the spot soon after receiving information and conducted an inspection. Officials confirmed that no suicide note has been recovered so far.
A detailed investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Concerns rise over student stress
The tragedy comes amid increasing concern over stress and anxiety among students preparing for competitive entrance examinations.
In recent weeks, multiple student suicide cases linked to NEET-UG 2026 uncertainty and exam-related pressure have been reported from different parts of the country.
Earlier this month, a NEET aspirant in Rajasthan also allegedly died by suicide after reportedly becoming distressed following the cancellation of the examination.
NEET-UG cancellation affected lakhs of students
The National Testing Agency (NTA) cancelled the NEET-UG 2026 examination earlier this month following allegations of irregularities and a paper leak controversy.
More than 22 lakh aspirants across India were affected by the decision.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan later announced that the re-examination would be conducted on June 21 and that the exam would move to a computer-based format from next year.
The latest incident has once again highlighted growing concerns surrounding academic pressure and mental health challenges faced by students preparing for highly competitive examinations.
