A disturbing and disgraceful incident has rattled Kalaburagi, sparking outrage across civil society. A transgender woman, Ankita Chavhan, was publicly stripped, beaten, and humiliated by her own community members in a horrifying act of violence.

The assault occurred on March 15, 2025, at Kalaburagi bus stand. Six transgender women—identified as Shivani, Bhavani, Mala, Jagadavi Bhavani, and Sheela—forcefully shaved Ankita’s head, disrobed her, and subjected her to brutal physical abuse. Ankita revealed she was attacked after demanding repayment of ₹8 to 9 lakh and gold from the perpetrators.

Vaishali, State Co-President of the Movement for Gender and Sexual Pluralism Bangalore, addressed the media in Kalaburagi, vehemently condemning the incident. She called it a grave violation of human rights, demanding swift arrests and stringent action under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019.

“Public humiliation, stripping, and assault of anyone—especially by members of the same community—cannot be tolerated. This incident reflects not only cruelty but also the failure of law enforcement to act on prior similar cases reported in Kalaburagi,” Vaishali stated.

The circulation of videos capturing the assault has further fueled public outrage, with many questioning why the police have not yet apprehended the attackers.

Ankita, speaking tearfully, pleaded for strict punishment, highlighting the mental and physical trauma she endured. Activists and citizens alike are demanding immediate justice to prevent such heinous acts from recurring.
