Dubai: The 10th episode of Subalterns by Village TV Trust, Mangaluru and St. Loyola College, Bengaluru was held on Friday December 3 at 4.30 pm IST.

With the objective of ‘P2P – Local to Global’, the show is aimed at providing a platform for unheard young voices of the society and thus create a supportive environment.

The event was hosted by Kiran Nirkan. The weekly programme is aired in Kannada.

In the beginning of the programme host Kiran Nirkan explaining the motto of starting ‘Subalterns’ said, “the new series has been started with an intention to provide a voice to the voiceless people, who belong to the marginalised communities of the society. As a part of the decennial celebrations of NewsKarnataka, we have undertaken this initiative.”

Speaking further he welcomed all the participants of the talk show series.

Avinash, a first year BCom student was the special guest of the event. He is the son of Bheerappa and Sunanda. His father being a graduate, is a cab driver.

Bheerappa told to have been working as a cab driver in Bengaluru from past ten years. His wife, Sunanda too works as a maid at various houses and extends her hand to supplement family earnings.

Bheerappa expressed himself being the victim of economic crisis that was the result of Covid – 19. Bheerappa also recollected the aid of Loyola College and his house owner during the crisis.

Dr. Kumaraswamy Bijjihalli, Head of the Kannada Department in Loyola College, Bengaluru said that Subalterns is a wonderful programme. Loyola College has many students who belong to such marginalised families. Our college gives admissions to the students of Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribes, Ahinda and all the marginalised communities. We are very happy that NewsKarnataka has come forward and given a platform to express their woes.

Answering Kiran Nirkan’s question on the facilities available for the cab drivers under the State and Central government he said, Cab drivers are neither covered under State nor Central Government. They are ruled by the Government but are not under the Government.

According to him, if government channelises drivers’ tax money for their own development it can raise their stature.

Loyola College Principal Fr. Francis D’Almeida made a appearence in the session and expressed his best wishes for the academic and career success of Avinash.

Dr. Rajesh, Head Of the Department of Commerce, Loyola College, expressed his concern on forth planned lockdown due to Omicron varient of Covid. He pitied the chaotic state, the cab drivers may face with the imposition of another lockdown.
