Twelve labourers from Madhya Pradesh, who were held captive in a coffee plantation in Karnataka, have been rescued, following a complaint lodged by their families. The workers, hailing from Ashoknagar district, were reportedly confined by their contractor after he took an advance payment of ₹90,000 and fled.

Acting on the complaint filed on January 30, Superintendent of Police Vineet Jain directed a team from Ashoknagar to Karnataka’s Chikkamagaluru district. After locating the labourers, the team collaborated with local authorities, including Jayapura police, to rescue the workers.

The labourers, working under conditions resembling bonded labour, were found trapped and were safely brought back to Madhya Pradesh. The contractor, Afsar Ali, who had fled after taking the advance, was apprehended and transported back to Ashoknagar. He has since been remanded to judicial custody.

Police continue to investigate the case, suspecting that other workers might also be subjected to similar exploitation at the plantation.
