Facing intense backlash, the Akhila Bharatha Veerashaiva Mahasabha has withdrawn its controversial order that called for a joint celebration of Basava Jayanti and Renuka Jayanti, breaking with longstanding tradition.
The now-retracted April 2 directive, signed by Mahasabha state president and former DGP Shankar Bidari, had sparked immediate outrage among Lingayat leaders and devotees. Many warned that merging the two festivals would disrespect cultural traditions and risk deeply dividing the community.
Prominent community members and mathadheeshwaras swiftly rallied, approaching minister Eshwar Khandre and Mahasabha chairman MLA Dr Shamanur Shivashankarappa. With growing pressure from Basava organizations, Jagathika Lingayat groups, and district units of the Mahasabha, the leadership was forced into damage control.
Confirming the rollback, Mahasabha secretary Renuka Prasanna said, “We have withdrawn the April 2 circular. Traditional Basava Jayanti celebrations will continue as before. There will be no changes.”
Behind-the-scenes talks and a groundswell of community sentiment ultimately led to the decision, signaling the importance of cultural sensitivity and unity within the Lingayat community.
