A significant transformation in alcoholic beverage preferences is underway in Dakshina Kannada district, with beer eclipsing Indian Made Liquor (IML) as the drink of choice, particularly in coastal areas where humidity levels are at their peak. This shift, driven by economic factors and evolving consumer habits, reflects a growing affinity for beer among residents.

Shifting Landscape Amidst the Pandemic

In the backdrop of the ongoing pandemic, Dakshina Kannada district has witnessed a noteworthy change in alcohol consumption patterns. While the consumption of IML has remained relatively static, beer has surged in popularity, signaling a broader transformation in consumer preferences and purchasing behavior, especially along coastal regions.

Sales Data and Economic Factors

Data from the Excise Department reveals a remarkable disparity in sales volumes between IML and beer. While IML sales have seen minimal growth in recent years, beer sales have experienced a consistent upward trajectory, surpassing IML figures. In the fiscal year 2023-24 alone, an impressive 25,03,153 boxes of beer were sold, indicating a significant surge compared to previous years.

One of the primary catalysts behind this shift is the increase in excise duty on liquor enforced by the state government. The subsequent rise in alcohol prices has adversely affected the purchasing power of consumers, particularly those from lower and middle-income groups, prompting many to seek out more affordable alternatives like beer.

Market Response and Consumer Appeal

Local liquor vendors corroborate this trend, reporting a surge in beer sales amidst the price hikes. Despite the stagnation in IML sales, there has been no substantial revenue loss for the government, underscoring a seamless transition in consumer preferences. Beyond its affordability, the appeal of beer lies in its refreshing nature, especially in the region’s humid climate, further fueling its popularity.

Consistent Growth and Future Outlook

Over the past five years, beer sales have exhibited consistent year-on-year growth, averaging between 15 to 20 per cent annually, according to officials from the Excise Department. This upward trajectory underscores the enduring appeal of beer and foreshadows its continued prominence in Dakshina Kannada’s beverage landscape.
