Bagalakote: Principal District and Sessions Judge GS Deshpande said that superstitions and evil practices are still alive in the rural areas and the role of Project Developmeng Officers in preventing child marriage by creating awareness among the people is important.
He inaugurated a training workshop for Project Development Officers on the role of village panchayats in the implementation of active children’s gram sabha, children’s rights and protection in collaboration with the District Legal Services Authority, District Administration, Zilla Panchayat and UNICEF. “People should be made aware about health and malnutrition. Panchayat Development Officers should visit schools and create awareness among children and parents through children to prevent child marriage, he said.
He added that such a training programme was organised in view of the important role of PDOs in this work, and they should make good use of it.
Deputy Commissioner P. Sunilkumar said that if one is planning to make an achievement in the Government profession, they should create awareness among the people about the prohibition of child marriage in the Gram Panchayat and aim to protect the girl child. Thus, such a social evil can be eradicated. He said that the cooperation of voluntary organisations should be sought to undertake this work.
Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer T. Bhubalan said that children’s village meetings should be held compulsorily in the panchayat area and children’s problems should be heard. Nutrition among children is an important factor and Project Development Officers should visit Anganawadi schools in village areas. He said to create awareness about the facilities and rights that children get from the Government.
