Prominent Congress figures, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and members of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), will convene in Belagavi on December 26. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced that this meeting aligns with the Gandhi Bharat programme, commemorating the centenary of the 1924 Congress session held in Belagavi.
Speaking at a press briefing in Belagavi, Shivakumar highlighted the significance of the Gandhi Bharat initiative. On December 27, following the CWC session, a grand public gathering featuring Congress leaders and supporters from across the nation will be held at the CPED grounds in Belagavi.
Reflecting on Karnataka’s historical ties with the Congress, Shivakumar noted that the 1924 Belagavi session, presided over by Mahatma Gandhi, remains a landmark event. A well constructed during the session to meet the attendees’ water requirements, known as the ‘Congress well,’ remains functional to this day.
Shivakumar emphasized that while the party initially considered holding the meeting at Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) accepted his recommendation to host it in Belagavi. A statue of Mahatma Gandhi is set to be unveiled at Suvarna Vidhana Soudha, and legislators from all parties will be invited to this historic occasion.
The event not only celebrates Congress’s legacy but also underscores Karnataka’s pivotal role in India’s political history.
