Dharawad: The BJP Government’s move to close down the Indira Canteen, which is aimed at satiating the hunger of the poor and economically weaker sections of the society, has evoked public outrage.
Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that the BJP Government, which is working to put a wreath on the stomachs of the poor, should drop this decision.
Addressing a press conference at a private hotel in the City, he said that since the canteens are named after Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the Government wants to close it down the canteens that provide breakfast and meals to the poor at a lower rate. This is a great injustice to the public and poor,” he said.
“Around 400 Indira Canteens were constructed when the Congress Party was in power with a dream of a hunger-free State. Indira Canteen, which provides low-cost meals to the poor, students, auto drivers and labourers, has a political motive of providing food to the poor, and students. The closure of the Indira Canteen, which provides low-cost food to autorickshaw drivers and labourers because of political reason is indeed an anti-people move,” he said and warned that the Indira canteen should not be closed for any reason.
