Gadag: A grandmother is accused of causing the death of her nine-month-old grandchild by feeding her Beetle leaves and arecanut in Purtageri village, Gajendragad taluk.
The occurrence occurred on November 22 but was reported belatedly. The child’s mother, Nagarathna, has filed a complaint against her mother-in-law, Saroja, at the Gajendragad police station. Nagarathna, who returned to her husband’s home five months after giving birth, faced a question from Saroja, her mother-in-law: “Did you intend to have a baby so soon?” In a burst of anger, Saroja purportedly caused the child’s demise by feeding her areca nut, beetle leaves.
The final rites for the child took place on November 22. Acting on a complaint filed by the child’s mother, Nagarathna, the police exhumed the body on Friday (November 24) and forwarded it for post-mortem examination. A police squad, headed by Gadag AC Venkatesh Nayak and CP SS Bilagi, visited the location.
