Bengaluru: Even though all the major temples across the state will open for the devotees from June 8th or shortly thereafter, two major temples of the state i.e. Savadatti Yellamma temple in Belagavi and Shri Krishna Mutt in Udupi will not open.
Ishapriya Tirtha swami, Paryaya Admar Mutt seer said that the Shri Krishna Mutt will be thrown open for devotees after a few days.
Meanwhile, in Belagavi, fearing that the arrival of devotees from Maharastra may result in the spread of COVID 19, the district administration decided against the opening of the Savadatti Yellamma temple, a famous Devi temple of the South Karnataka. DC SB Bommanahalli issued an order in this regard.
According to the sources, most of the temples of the North Karnataka region are expected to open for the devotees only after June 30 as the region is fighting to contain the spread of the COVID 19
Savadatti Yellammma Temple
Yellamma Temple, also known as Renuka Temple, is a pilgrimage destination located about 5 kilometers away from the town of Saundatti (also known as Savadatti) in Karnataka. It is situated on a hilltop known earlier as Siddhachal Parvat and now known as “Yellamma Gudi”, named after the temple. The deity in the temple is the goddess Yellamma or Ellama or Renuka, revered as a fertility goddess. The temple is associated with the ancient Devadasi practice of dedicating girls to the temple, which the Government of Karnataka claims to have eliminated.
The hill, a part of the Sidhachal or Ramagiri hill range which overlooks the Malaprabha river, contains archaeological evidence of occupation dating to the mid-8th to mid-11th centuries of the early Rashtrakuta or late Chalukyan period and includes megalithic tombs which predate these periods.
Udupi Sri Krishna Mutt
Udupi Sri Krishna Mutt is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Krishna located in the town of Udupi in Karnataka, India.
Thousands of pious devotees throng the Krishna temple all round the year to catch a glimpse of Lord Krishna. The unique feature of Shree Krishna Mutt temple is that the Lord is worshipped only through a window with nine holes called the Navagraha Kitiki. The window is exquisitely carved and silver – plated. It has been a tradition in this temple to worship the Lord only through this window.
The matha area resembles a living ashram, a holy place for daily devotion and living. Surrounding the Sri Krishna Matha are several temples, the most ancient being made of basic wood and stone of 1,500 years origin.
Udupi is 60 kms north of Mangalore and is considered to be one of the holiest places for pilgrimage in southern India.
