Congress declares candidate for Sindgi before announcement of poll date

Vijayapura:  Congress that has the track record of giving ticket at the last day of filing of nomination papers or changing the candidate at the last minute for the elections, has done quite the contrary.

This time the party has announced the candidate even before the election commission declaring the poll dates.

The Congress has declared Ashok Managuli as its official candidate to contest from Sindgi in the coming by-elections which become inevitable after the demise of MLA and father of Ashok, M. C. Managuli.

The dates for by-election for Maski and Basavakalyan have been announced, but not for Sindgi so far, yet the Congress has decided to field Ashok Managuli for the constituency.

It may be noted that Ashok Managuli joined the Congress recently by quitting the JD(S), the party with which his late father had associated for decades.

It is believed that while his father had tremendous faith in the JD(S), he does not have the same faith and confidence of winning the election by remaining in the JD(S).

One the reasons why the party did not delay in announcing Ashok as its official candidate, is believed to be a lack of choice the Congress had.

The party has no strong face to project as candidate in Sindgi. After the demise of senior Managuli about a couple of months ago, the party was desperately searching for a potential candidate, but there was none.

The sources said that at that time, Ashok approached the Congress leaders and expressed his desire to join the party, on the condition of getting a ticket.

The Congress too which was looking for a better candidate, did not delay in grabbing the opportunity and announced Ashok as the official candidate.

By giving ticket to Ashok, the party has given ticket to the dominant Panchamsali community instead of any backward community leader as demanded by party leaders of Sindgi.

The Congress meanwhile counting on the traditional votes, the sympathy votes could generate from the demise of Managuli and the community votes for the victory.

Meanwhile, the leaders of the minority community and the backwards who are demanding ticket, are reportedly unhappy with the announcement.

Now, since the election dates are yet to be announced, it is the responsibility of the party leaders to douse the fire of dissent before the polls.

Amid this, Ashok has expressed confidence of winning in the election as he is hopeful of Congress leaders campaigning for him and believes that other leaders of the minority, and backwards would also extend support.
