Vijayapura: Kandgal Hanumantaraya Ranga Mandira to be  the venue for presenting a popular play, ‘Parva’ of veteran writer Dr. S. L. Bhyrappa. The play, which is prepared by Mysore-based repertory Rangayana, has already been presented in many districts including Mysuru and Bengaluru.

“After holding successful plays in these districts, the government finally decided to present the play in all districts of the State. As part of this we have already presented the play in Davangere and Dharwad Districts, and now we are holding this in Vijayapura City on April 20,” said Addanda Cariappa, Director of Rangayana.

Addressing mediapersons on Friday April 1, he said that it was the biggest challenge before Rangayana to turn the epic book into a play. The book has been authored by noted and renowned writer of Karnataka, Dr. S. L. Bhyrappa.

He said that taking up the challenge, he first decided to contact persons who can write basic concepts of the play based on the book. “For that, I contacted noted writer, director and actor, Prakash Belawadi. He took time to prepare the concept. The second challenge was to take the permission of Dr. Bhyrappa to make his book into a play. Since Bhyrappa is very particular about his book being made into play or film, he checks clearly about the people who are involved in the process. When he met us and heard our concept, he was impressed and gave his consent to make the book into a play,” Cariappa said.

He said that Rangayana contacted around 40 artistes to perform in the play. It took nearly two years to prepare for the play where eminent and experts of the fields were involved. The best in the industry of art and film-making were involved in designing costumes, sets and music. “Since it is a 600 page book, it was not possible to make a short play of around a couple of hours. So we decided to have a long eight hour play. Though initially people felt that it would be too lengthy to sit and watch, however when we presented our first play in Mysuru, people liked it and it became an instant success,“ he said.

Cariappa said that since they have to spend on the payment of artistes, travels and other things, they have decided to charge Rs. 200 as ticket charge to the play.

Some people may think that Rs. 200 is too much, but considering the efforts gone into making this play, Rs. 200 is affordable. He said that the play will start at around 3.30 pm on April 20, and will last till 10.30 pm with at least four breaks in between. He appealed to the people to watch the show and encourage the artistes.

Assistant Director, Kannada and Culture Department, B. Nagaraj and activist Sharanu Sabarad were present.
