Vijayapura: As part of the ambitious project of the Government to supply cooking gas to each house through meter-fitted pipes instead of cylinders, it has been decided to install the project in some selected wards of the City on a pilot basis.

The installation and implementation of the project is expected to avoid issues of waiting for supply of cylinders to houses.

In order to implement the project, the survey for laying the pipeline for gas supply has been initiated by the State Government in the City.

The contract to conduct the survey and implement the project has been handed over to a private company Atlantic Gulf & Pacific Company (AG&P). The same company is carrying out domestic piped natural gas (PNG) works in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and in many Districts of Karnataka.

According to the officials of the Vijayapura City Corporation the State Government has shortlisted many districts and cities including Vijayapura for PNG works in the State. A private company is already carrying out a survey across the City. The survey is being conducted to find out the feasibility and project cost.

This project aims at providing gas supply through pipeline for domestic use to over 25,000 houses in the first phase. This project is likely to be implemented in only a few localities in the initial phase and connections for the remaining colonies will be enabled in the subsequent phases, claimed sources.

Similar works are also being carried out in Koppal, Bagalakote, and Dharawad Districts of North Karnataka. The same project has already been completed in parts of Hubballi and Belagavi City.

Vijaykumar Makalaki, Commissioner of City Corporation said that, the works for laying the pipeline for the supply of domestic-piped natural gas is likely to start in a month or two. The contractors have reported technical and financial issues, which are being sorted out at the Government level. The work has been entrusted to AG&P company.

“The survey work is being carried out in Adarsh Nagar, Nandini Layout, Jala Nagar and other main localities of the City. The State Government has held multiple meetings with the Commissioners of all the City Corporations regarding PNG works. This project is likely to be implemented in a year or two in the city,” added Commissioner Makalaki.
