Vijayapura: Alleging ruling BJP Government of conspiring to close the lone State Women’s University located in Vijayapura, Dalit Leader and Activist, Srinath Pujari has claimed that a preliminary discussion has taken place in this regard at the government level.

Speaking to mediapersons, he said that the State Government with the ministry concerned has already chaired high-level committee meetings to shut down the Karnataka State Akkamahadevi Women’s University (KSAWU). The leaders who fought with the State Government to bring the women’s university to Vijayapura are now conspiring to close it,” he alleged.

Pujari said that the Government should drop its plan about the closure of the University. This varsity has been established based on the D. M. Nanjundappa Committee Report, which had said that this university will play a key role in empowering the women and providing quality education to them. It is the only women’s university in the State and efforts should be made to provide better facilities and not close it, he said.

Pujari said that the Government is making necessary preparations to shut the women’s university and planning to encourage co-education in the same varsity. The Government has to establish a separate university for co-education instead of closing down the only women’s university, he asserted.

But when asked whether he has any supportive documents to prove his allegations, he said that, “I don’t have documents as only the meetings are being chaired at the higher level to take a call on this. The Government is yet to release any documents or order with regard to this. I have discussed this issue with the university registrar.“ But I can tell you that the government has made up its mind to close the only women’s university in the State. We will condemn it and stage an indefinite protest in the coming days,” he added.
