Vijayapura: The District has continued to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall in the present month as the District has recorded 40 mm rains in the last 24 hours.

The heavy rains coupled with gusty winds have damaged several houses while the lightning has killed cattle heads as well.

According to the District Administration, a total of 24 houses in the District have been damaged due to heavy rains that lashed on the evening of Thursday May 19. Of them, five houses in Basavanabagewadi taluk, one house in Talikota, two in Kolhara, four houses in Babaleshwara and nine houses in Muddebihala  taluk have been damaged due to rains.

The District Administration officials said that the relief amount as per the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) norms, the families whose houses have been damaged, has been given. Besides houses being damaged, two cattle heads have perished in Indi Taluk due to lightning, the officials said.

While the officials said that there was damage to the houses, some sources said that several trees have also fallen in rural areas due to gusty winds.

As far as the damage to standing crops is concerned, there is still no report on it. Since the sowing season has not started yet, only standing horticulture crops such as bananas could suffer loss. The sources said that they are still collecting details from various villages about the crop loss.

With regard to any forecast of the rains, the department said that several interior parts of the North Karnataka region may receive heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next two days.

The rains have  not only damaged houses but even roads of urban areas have suffered heavy damage due to gushing water.

In Vijayapura City also, some of the internal roads have been damaged as the tar laid on it has washed away. At some places, the land has sunk due to water stagnation which is putting the commuters in trouble.

On Friday May 20, though the City did not receive heavy rains, drizzling continued for a few hours and cloudy weather prevailed.
