Vijayapura: The war of words between Minister Govind Karjol and the supporters of Former Minister and Congress MLA M. B. Patil has begun over taking credit for the naming of Karnataka Women’s University after 12th-century female social reformer, Akkamahadevi.

While Karjol has reportedly claimed that the credit should go to the BJP for naming the lone Women’s University of the State after Akkamahadevi, Congress is rebutting the claims.

“It is completely unfortunate that the BJP which has simply played no role neither in establishing the University nor naming it after Akkamahadevi is taking credit now. Karjol should not give false information and should not try to take credit for the works which his party did not do”, said Former MLA and District Congress Committee president, Raju Algur.

Addressing presspersons at the party office on Thursday January 27, he tried to list the works in chronological order on establishment and naming of the University by the Congress.

“Firstly, it was the then Chief Minister of the Congress, S. M. Krishna announced the establishment of Women’s University in Vijayapura in 1999. In coming years, Congress leader Sonai Gandhi was invited for the inauguration of the University,” Algur said.

Describing the statement as hilarious, he said that it is a known fact that it was Congress that initiated the process to name the University after Akkamahadevi.

He said that in one of the events held on June 16, 2016, in Vijayapura, Former Minister Leelavati R. Prasad proposed the name of Akkamahadevi to the Women’s University.

“M. B. Patil who was also present in the programme, assured to get the proposal realized by talking to the then Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah. Later, the government issued a gazette notification in this regard,” Algur said.

He said that several Seers of the Lingayat community hailed the decision. On June 11, 2017, a mega event was held inside University premises where it was officially declared that the University would be named after Akkamahadevi.

“While this is the fact, yet Karjol is giving false news which is not acceptable,” he said.

He said that of late, Karjol is spreading canards about the Congress and taking credit for the programmes of the Congress.

“He should not do that as it does not suit his stature,” Algur said.

He said that Congress is not taking credit for the Airport being developed in Vijayapura. “We are saying openly that it was during the BJP that the foundation stone of the airport was laid. Today also, the BJP government is implementing the project. It would be sheer foolishness if Congress takes credit for the Airport project. Similarly, the BJP should not take any credit for the project and programmes implemented by Congress,” he said.

Congress leaders, Suresh Gonasagi, Gangadhar Sambanni, Subhash Kalebag and others were present.
