Vijayapura: The newly built Railway Goods-shed at Aliyabad village, about ten kilometers from the city is all set to start functioning.
Being built at the cost of Rs. 23 crore, the new shed is said to be at least five times bigger than the present shed located adjacent to the central railway station of the city.
“ While the regular shed is ready for usage, the covered shed will be operational within a couple of months as the construction is underway”, said Prince Vergese, Senior Section Engineer.
Informing the media persons about the project at the workplace on Tuesday, he said that the project was started around three years ago and is almost complete now.
Vergese said that the new shed is at least five times bigger than the present shed. “ The shed is so large that perhaps we may not need to think of extending it for several years to come”, he said.
To a question, he said that though the shed is ready and permission is also granted to the Railway Department to use it, however the decision is yet to be taken by the department to start using it.
“ Since the shed is ready, we hope that the department will soon start using it”, he said.
Vergese said that after the shifting of the shed from the central railway station, the station can use the available areas for expansion of the railway projects in future.
Expressing happiness over the completion of the project, MP Ramesh Jigajinagi who was present to inspect the works, said that the project was initially started at the estimated cost of Rs. 18 crore.
“ But over the period of time, the cost escalated and is now expected to be completed at the estimated cost of Rs. 23 crore”, he said.
He gave credit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for granting funds for the project.
