Vijayapura: Following several complaints received from the residents that they are facing menace due to the increased population of pigs in their localities, the City Corporation has directed the pig owners to pick their pigs and shift them to sheds.

It may be noted that over the years due to the proliferation of pigs in the City, the residents are facing acute problems as the pigs are posing a threat of spreading contagious diseases.

The residents of many localities had started complaining to the Corporation to take action against the owners.

“We have received complaints from the people and we are serious about the pig menace. In this regard, we have issued directions to the pig owners to pick their pigs from their respective areas and shift them to sheds. Leaving them open has become a problem for the people,” said Vijaykumar Makkalagi, the City Corporation Commissioner.

He said that they have directed the owners to pick the pigs, or else the Corporation will be forced to collect the pigs and leave them away from the City limits.

“We have to take stern action now to clear the city from pigs. We have already issued directions to owners to start collecting the pigs, else we will hire pig catchers and leave the pigs far away from the city limits. We may also impose a fine on owners if they do not follow the direction,” he said.

While pigs’ owners are accused of leaving the pigs open which has now created trouble, the officials hold some residents responsible for the creation of the pig menace.

Since many people throw domestic waste and garbage on the roads, it becomes good feed for the pigs to eat and grow.

Despite the City Corporation providing vehicles to collect garbage from each house, still many people do not use it.

“They show sheer irresponsibility as a citizen and throw garbage on the roads. If the pigs don’t get food, then their population reduces naturally over the year. Therefore, the people too should behave responsibly in keeping the city clean and pig free,” the officials said.
