Vijayapura: ‘Studying possibility of starting seaplane service’

Vijayapura: Stating that the works of the Airport project are going at a fast pace in the District, Shailendra Beldale, Chairman, Karnataka State Industries and Infrastructure Development Corporation has hoped that the works would be completed soon.

Chairing the meeting of officials during his visit to inspect the works of the Airport at Burnapur Village on Wednesday November 16, he said that the Government has given administrative approval for the upgradation of the airport from ATR – 72 to Airbus 320.

The approval has been given to grant Rs. 127 Crore additional amount for the upgradation, he said.

Asserting that the development of the airport would improve tourism and also encourage tourists to visit other nearby areas as they can save travel time, he said that tourism will also provide additional jobs to people.

He said that the Government is planning to develop a total of 14 airports in the State with the financial assistance of the Central Government.

Speaking on the occasion, KSIIDC Managing Director M. R. Ravi said that with the Central Government giving permission to start seaplanes in the State, the State Government has prepared an action plan to introduce the seaplane in the State at a suitable place to promote tourism.

“The name of Almatti Dam has been included among the proposed places for introducing this facility. The department has undertaken a feasibility study to launch the project at Kabini, KSR, Hidakal and Almatti dams,” he said.

Mentioning the status of the airport of Vijayapura, Deputy Commissioner, Vijaymahantesh Danammanavar said that for the ATR-72 project, the Government has granted Rs. 220 Crore. In the first phase, Rs. 95 Crore was spent while Rs. 125 Crore was spent for the second phase. Around 64 per cent of the works of the first phase and 40 per cent of the works of the second phase have been completed.
