Vijayapura: At a time when Congress managed to give over 40 per cent of its tickets to Muslims in the Vijayapuara City Corporation polls, BJP has clearly and continued to distance itself from this minority community.

The National political parties Congress and BJP announced the candidates’ list for 35 and 33 wards, respectively, on Monday. As a surprise, BJP did not field any candidates in ward numbers 20 and 27 as both these wards have a Muslim majority. It may also be noted that the saffron cadre has not given tickets to any Muslims in the VCC.

What is interesting is that Vijayapura City has over 40 per cent Muslim population, making it one of the biggest Muslim-dominated cities in the State. Congress has fielded as many as 15 Muslim candidates, JD (S) has given the opportunity to 12 Muslims, whereas BJP has not fielded a single candidate from the minority community.

Meanwhile, the other regional parties JD (S), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) have fielded at least one candidate from the Muslim community.

Meanwhile, mentioning the reason for the party not fielding a single Muslim candidate, R. S. Patil Kuchabal, District President of BJP, said, “I will make it clear that the BJP is not against Muslims. In both these wards Muslims have a lion share in voting. We have also not received any applications from the aspirants or party workers seeking tickets from ward number 20 and 27. If we had received any applications, we would have fielded our party representatives.”

“We have to build this society by taking the confidence of all the religions, castes and creeds. The BJP Government has given many pro-minority programmes. It has never meted out differences between religions. It is not the culture of the party. It is because of the vote bank politics and communal agenda of Congress; Muslims are yet to come forward and support saffron cadre.”

“In the past, Dalits were confined only to the grand old party. Now, after realising their political agenda, many Dalits have announced support for the BJP. We are also confident that the Muslims will join hands with BJP in the coming days,” reiterated Kuchabal.
