Vijayapura: Even as the filing of nomination papers for the coming City Corporation elections is underway, while regional parties have already announced at least the first list of candidates, national parties such as BJP and Congress are yet to make their list public.

It is learnt that national parties are facing a lot of competition and have been still selecting the aspirants, delaying the announcement of the candidates. The BJP is said to be facing difficulty in selecting the candidates because of some internal bickering between leaders supporting MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal and Former MLA Appu Pattanshetty. No such report is coming from the Congress camp on the rift within the leaders. However since the majority of the top leaders of the party are busy with the Bharat Jodo event of the party, which is now passing through Karnataka, they are unable to spare time for the selection of the candidates.

Amid this, the regional parties have not only released at least a first list of the candidates but are also preparing for the release of lists.

“We have already released the list of nine candidates who will be contesting from various wards. We are in a process of identifying more candidates and shortly,” said Rohan Ainapur, the District President of the Aam Aadmi Party.

To a question, he said that though the party is trying to find candidates for all 35 wards, they may not get candidates for all the wards. “We will get at least 20 candidates to field in the polls,” he said.

Similarly, AIMIM which is also contesting in the polls has declared to field candidates for all the wards. However, the party so far has managed to get nine candidates only.

District President Allabaksha Bijapur said that they are expecting to field at least 15 candidates. He candidly admitted that the party would not be able to get candidates for the reserved wards.

What is curious is that while AAP and AIMIM which are contesting City Corporation polls for the first time have announced tickets, the JD (S) which is the biggest regional party of the State is struggling.

The party too does not seem to be too interested as it has neither held any press conference nor has issued any paper statements on its preparations. However, State General Secretary, Mallikarjuna Yendigeri refutes allegations of the party not being serious in fighting polls.

“No doubt like other parties such as BJP and the Congress, we are not working so intensely, however since we are a cadre-based party, we are doing our job. We are in the process of identifying the candidates. We will certainly field candidates in all wards,” he said.
