Vijayapura: The puzzle as to who will be the next Vice Chancellor of Karnataka State Akkamahadevi Women’s University has remained unsolved with the government continuing to delay the appointment for the lone women’s university in the state.

It has been about five months since the University’s last VC, Sabiha, completed her tenure. Since then, Omkar Kakade, the Head of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication has been functioning as the acting VC.

It may be noted that about three months ago, the search committee submitted a list of names to the government for the post of VC, but the latter has not yet taken a final call.

Sources said that three names were suggested for the post: Prof. Pushpa Savadatti, Prof. Tulasi Mala and Prof. Gomati Devi.

Since Prof. Gomati Devi has already been appointed as Vice Chancellor of the Bangalore University, the competition is now down to Prof. Savadatti and Prof. Tulasi Mala.

It is said that Prof. Savadatti is in the race for the post of VC of Central University of Gulbarga also, however, as other candidates are also in the fray, she is trying her luck at the Akkamahadevi Women’s University.

The accusation against the government is that, even though the search committee suggested names for the post three months ago, it has been delaying the decision citing various reasons including the recently held by-elections and other administrative work.

Amidst this, it is learnt that both candidates are making efforts to get the final approval in their favour, for which they are in touch with influential leaders.

Whoever becomes the new VC will be the fifth of the University since its establishment in Vijayapura.

Since the state has only one women’s university, it is a matter of pride for any woman to become VC of this prestigious institution.

After the previous Congress government made an amendment in the Karnataka University Act to reserve the the post of VC for women only in this university, male professors cannot rise up to the coveted post, but they can become acting VC.

Funnily enough, before the government made the amendment, no man was made VC of this university. However, the amendment has officially removed all possibilities for male professors to elevate to this position.
