A viral social media post alleging a cab fare scam in Bengaluru has triggered concern among commuters over safety and transparency in ride-hailing services.

According to the complainant, he had booked a ride through Ola from Majestic to Jalahalli for ₹285. However, upon reaching the destination, the driver allegedly demanded ₹5,950—nearly 20 times the original fare.

Dispute over inflated fare

The commuter claimed the driver insisted the higher amount was linked to previous ride cancellations and would be deducted from his account if unpaid. When the passenger refused, the situation reportedly escalated.

He stated that the driver became aggressive and continued to demand the inflated amount, creating a tense environment. The commuter also mentioned that language barriers made the situation more stressful.

Concerns over support response

The passenger said he contacted Ola’s emergency support but found the response “dismissive.” According to him, the representative questioned whether it was a safety issue and disconnected the call, leaving him to handle the situation alone.

Driver reportedly fled

The situation de-escalated after the commuter’s house owner intervened and suggested resolving the matter at a police station. However, the driver allegedly fled midway while en route.

Growing concerns among users

The incident has sparked wider discussion online, with several users claiming to have faced similar issues. Concerns raised include fare transparency, driver conduct, and the responsiveness of customer support systems.

Police have advised the public to immediately contact emergency helpline 112 in case of such incidents.

Need for stronger safeguards

The case highlights the importance of stricter monitoring, clear billing systems, and effective support mechanisms in ride-hailing platforms to ensure passenger safety and trust.
