Siddapura police have filed a detailed 1,328-page chargesheet before the 56th ACMM Court against nine accused in connection with the ₹7.1 crore ATM cash van robbery that took place on November 19 last year.
Among the accused is suspended police constable Annappa Naik. The robbery occurred on the Dairy Circle flyover when a CMS Infosystem Ltd vehicle carrying cash for HDFC Bank was intercepted by a gang posing as Reserve Bank of India officials. The staff were allegedly restrained before the gang fled with the cash.
129 pieces of evidence cited
The chargesheet lists 129 pieces of evidence, including eyewitness testimonies, technical data and forensic material such as fingerprints.
The investigation was led by ACP Narayana Swamy V of the Jayanagar subdivision, with support from Siddapura, Jayanagar and South Cyber Crime police units.
Police have booked the accused under charges including dacoity, wrongful restraint, criminal conspiracy, destruction of evidence and criminal intimidation.
Inside role and GPS trail
Investigators identified J Xavier and Ravi as the main accused. Annappa Naik, along with Gopal, Rakesh, Naveen, Nelson, Dinesh and Jitesh, has been named as co-accused.
Police said Gopal, a CMS employee, allegedly tipped off Xavier, a former employee, about the movement of cash and claimed that RBI norms were being violated in transporting large sums.
Believing the money to be hawala funds, Annappa allegedly joined the conspiracy and arranged rental vehicles for the gang. Unaware that the vehicles were GPS-enabled, the accused were later traced through tracking data.
Police recovered ₹5.6 crore from Hoskote and seized the remaining cash from other states. Further proceedings are under way.
