A social media post highlighting a ₹700-plus cab fare for a short journey between Koramangala and Indiranagar has sparked fresh debate about rising transportation costs in Bengaluru.

The discussion began after a commuter shared a screenshot showing the fare quoted for a ride of less than 10 kilometres during peak evening hours. Calling the fare “daylight robbery”, the post quickly gained attention and drew responses from hundreds of residents who shared similar experiences.

Commuters voice frustration

Many users said surge pricing has become a common concern, particularly during evening rush hours, rainy weather and periods of heavy traffic.

Several commuters claimed they have frequently encountered unexpectedly high fares despite travelling relatively short distances. Others expressed frustration over ride cancellations and difficulties securing cabs during busy periods.

One user recalled being charged nearly ₹500 for a late-night journey between Ulsoor and Banaswadi, questioning why surge pricing remained active even after peak hours.

Calls for better regulation

The discussion soon expanded into a broader conversation about regulating app-based cab services.

Some users suggested introducing fixed per-kilometre pricing to reduce fare fluctuations. Others argued that passengers should receive compensation when drivers accept bookings and subsequently cancel rides.

Not everyone blames cab aggregators
