Bengaluru: As many as 1,520 motorists who rode with pillion without helmet were penalised by the Bengaluru Traffic Police who started enforcing the new rule from Wednesday, on a low scale though.
The traffic police levied a fine of Rs 100 each against violators.
However, the police feel that the rate of compliance was up by 60 per cent when compared to January 12, that is when they started the awareness campaign.
While some violators claimed that they were not aware of the rule, many more hoped that the grace period was extended. Another section of violators even promised the cops that they would purchase a helmet soon.
Police sources say that pillions below the age of 12 years are exempted. They say that their primary aim is to make sure that pillion riders wear helmet whether it is ISI marked or not.
