Bengaluru: In a first of its kind policy decision, the state government and civic agencies are planning to construct 651 kilometers of non-motorized traffic lanes across the city. The idea is to encourage walking and cycling in order to improve the health of the people.
According to the comprehensive traffic plan proposed for the city, these non-motorized traffic lanes are coming up mostly in the Bengaluru central area.
As per the proposal, BBMP, DULT, and BMRCL will be given the responsibility of constructing these non-motorized traffic lanes.
The highlight of the draft proposal includes bicycle-docking stations on the roadside, dedicated bicycle lanes, 100% removal of footpath encroachment, well-maintained footpaths, and hefty fines on vehicle riders who use the non-motorised lanes.
“Once the proposal is approved, the scheme will be implemented. In the first phase, these non-motorised lanes will come up in the core city areas,” explained an officer privy to the developments.
