Amidst the scorching summer heat, ‘Active Bengaluru’, a non-profit organization, has emerged as a beacon of hope for residents in several slums across the city. Recognizing the dire need for water in these communities, the organization has taken proactive measures to supply water directly to their doorsteps.

Water Supply Initiative

‘Active Bengaluru’ is delivering 50,000 liters of water to residents of slums in North Bengaluru, including areas like Thanisandra, Hegde Nagar, and Saraipalya, on alternate days. With nearly 6,000 public borewells drying up in these regions, the organization’s intervention has been crucial in alleviating the water scarcity.

Project Zam Zam

Under the banner of ‘Project Zam Zam’, the organization has been providing borewell water free of charge to slum dwellers since March. To date, over 12 lakh liters of water have been supplied, significantly benefiting the vulnerable population. The initiative aims to prevent dehydration and reduce the risk of infections among residents, particularly during the hot summer months.

Community Collaboration

Water for the initiative is sourced from generous individuals willing to share water from their borewells. Upon receiving requests from residents, ‘Active Bengaluru’ dispatches vehicles equipped with four water tanks, each with a capacity of 2,500 liters. Residents are instructed to queue up and collect water from the designated taps on the tanks.

Addressing Critical Needs

While ‘Active Bengaluru’ typically focuses on policy advocacy, women’s empowerment, healthcare, and education, the severity of the water shortage prompted the organization to take immediate action. Recognizing that access to water directly impacts health and education outcomes, the organization mobilized resources to address this pressing need in the community.

A Lifeline for Vulnerable Communities

By providing essential water supply to slum residents, ‘Active Bengaluru’ has not only eased the immediate hardships caused by water scarcity but also contributed to the overall well-being and resilience of these marginalized communities. Through their concerted efforts, the organization continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those most in need.
