Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced that the government is seriously considering the inclusion of Anekal into the Greater Bengaluru jurisdiction. Plans for essential infrastructure upgrades—including Metro rail connectivity and Cauvery water supply—are underway to support the area’s rapid urbanization.
Speaking at the launch and foundation-laying ceremony for 78 civic projects in Hennagara Gram Panchayat, Anekal taluk, Shivakumar acknowledged mounting political backing for Anekal’s integration. “Senior leaders such as Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, ex-MP D.K. Suresh, and MLA B. Shivanna have been urging us to bring Anekal under Greater Bengaluru. Discussions with all stakeholders are ongoing,” he said.
He confirmed that tenders have been issued to deliver 30 million litres of Cauvery water per day to Anekal—a region long plagued by water scarcity. “Our goal is to ensure long-term water sustainability for residents,” he added.
In terms of transportation, Shivakumar revealed that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) is in progress for Metro rail expansion to key Bengaluru outskirts including Jigani, Sarjapur, Anekal, and Bannerghatta—fast-growing localities still underserved by urban mobility solutions.
These announcements follow the recent enactment of the Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill, 2024, which decentralizes BBMP operations by dividing the city into multiple smaller corporations under a unified Greater Bengaluru Authority. This restructuring aims to streamline service delivery and boost administrative efficiency.
Reassuring residents, Shivakumar emphasized inclusive progress: “We are committed to balanced urban development—no region, including Anekal, will be overlooked.”
