A 35-year-old migrant worker from Assam‘s Majuli district has died under unclear circumstances in Bengaluru, prompting his family and community members to seek a detailed investigation into the incident.
The deceased has been identified as Jiten Chirang, a resident of Karkichuk village in Majuli. He had travelled to Bengaluru nearly two months ago in search of employment opportunities.
Death reported during the night
According to local residents from his hometown, information about Chirang’s death was received through a phone call around 2.10 am.
“As it was late at night, we could not do anything immediately and advised them to inform the police. Around 2.30 am, police arrived at the location and shifted the body to a hospital,” a local resident said.
Chirang is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.
Community members said the Bengaluru unit of Takam Mising Porin Kébang (TMPK) is coordinating with authorities and assisting the family with further procedures.
Family demands investigation
Relatives and local residents have urged authorities to conduct a thorough inquiry to determine the exact cause of death.
The family is also exploring the possibility of bringing Chirang’s mortal remains back to Assam through the state’s Shraddhanjali scheme, which facilitates the repatriation of deceased Assamese citizens from other states.
Authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the circumstances surrounding the death.
Part of a worrying trend
Chirang’s death comes amid growing concerns over the deaths of Assamese migrant workers employed outside their home state.
In recent months, several workers from Assam have reportedly died under various circumstances in southern India, including Bengaluru and Chennai, raising questions about worker safety, welfare and support systems for migrant labourers.
The latest incident has once again drawn attention to the challenges faced by workers who migrate long distances in search of livelihood opportunities.
