Bengaluru: Australia on Friday officially inaugurated the permanent premises of its Consulate-General in Bengaluru, marking a significant milestone in the growing diplomatic, economic and educational partnership between Australia and southern India. The new office is expected to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, education, innovation and people-to-people exchanges while serving as Australia’s diplomatic hub for Karnataka and three other states.
The permanent Consulate-General has been established at the MFAR building on Cunningham Road and was inaugurated by Australia’s Assistant Minister for Citizenship, Customs and Multicultural Affairs and Assistant Minister for International Education, Julian Hill MP, along with Karnataka Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development M. B. Patil.
Permanent consulate inaugurated
The inauguration of the permanent Consulate-General marks a new phase in Australia’s engagement with one of India’s fastest-growing economic regions.
Speaking at the event, Julian Hill said a consulate represented far more than a diplomatic office, describing it as Australia’s single point of contact for trade, investment, education, consular services and broader bilateral cooperation.
He said the Australia–India relationship had become increasingly important in recent years and noted that the establishment of the permanent consulate reflected Australia’s commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership with India.
Hill also described Bengaluru as a globally recognised hub for entrepreneurship, technology and innovation, highlighting its growing international importance.
Karnataka welcomes Australian investment
Addressing the gathering, Karnataka Industries Minister M. B. Patil welcomed Australia’s decision to establish a permanent diplomatic presence in Bengaluru.
He said the move represented a strong vote of confidence in Karnataka’s economic future and reaffirmed Bengaluru’s position as a global centre for technology, innovation, education and scientific research.
Patil noted that Australia had consistently partnered with Karnataka across several major initiatives, including the Global Investors Meet, Bengaluru Tech Summit and Bengaluru Space Expo.
According to the minister, Australia’s continued engagement has contributed to the state’s growth in sectors such as advanced manufacturing, technology, innovation and education.
UNSW launches Bengaluru campus
Coinciding with the inauguration of the Consulate-General, the University of New South Wales (UNSW) officially opened its Bengaluru campus.
The university has become the highest-ranked foreign university to establish a campus in India, marking another important milestone in educational collaboration between the two countries.
The opening of the campus is expected to enhance academic partnerships, research collaboration and student exchange opportunities between Australia and India.
Bengaluru strengthens Australia ties
Officials said around 40 Australian companies currently operate in Bengaluru, reflecting the city’s growing importance as a destination for Australian businesses and investment.
The Consulate-General will oversee Australia’s engagement not only with Karnataka but also with Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana, expanding its diplomatic and commercial outreach across central and southern India.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Australian High Commissioner to India Philip Green OAM, Australian Consul General Hilary McGeachy, diplomats, industry representatives and education partners.
Expanding strategic partnership
The establishment of the permanent Consulate-General underlines the expanding strategic partnership between Australia and India, particularly in areas such as trade, technology, higher education, research and innovation.
With Bengaluru continuing to emerge as a global technology and startup hub, the new diplomatic mission is expected to facilitate closer collaboration between Australian institutions, businesses and Karnataka-based industries.
The opening of both the Consulate-General and the UNSW Bengaluru campus on the same day reflects the growing depth of Australia–India relations and reinforces Bengaluru’s role as an international centre for diplomacy, investment and higher education.
