Bengaluru: Police have arrested a 50-year-old autorickshaw driver for allegedly knocking down a woman and later dumping her body near a bus station in west Bengaluru in an attempt to evade responsibility.

Body found behind bus station

The case came to light on Monday morning when passersby noticed a woman’s body lying in a heap of garbage behind a bus stop in the Mylasandra area and alerted the police. The body was later identified as Kempamma (50), a resident of Mandya district.

Police shifted the body for postmortem examination and began an investigation to ascertain the cause of death and the circumstances leading to the incident.

Accident near Kengeri Upanagara

During the investigation, officials found that the incident was a case of a road accident rather than a homicide. According to police, Kempamma had arrived in the city by train and was near Kengeri Upanagara around 12:30 am when she was hit by an autorickshaw.

The accused, identified as Basavegowda (50), a driver from Laggere, was allegedly behind the wheel at the time of the accident.

Attempt to save victim, then panic

Police said that after the collision, Basavegowda panicked but initially attempted to assist the injured woman. He reportedly took her to a nearby hospital for treatment.

However, doctors advised him to shift her to a specialised hospital due to the severity of her injuries. While transporting her, he realised that Kempamma had succumbed.

Fearing legal consequences, the accused allegedly decided not to inform the authorities or the victim’s family.

Body dumped to avoid detection

Instead, Basavegowda disposed of the body behind a bus stop in Mylasandra and fled the scene. The act of dumping the body led to initial suspicion of foul play before the investigation revealed the sequence of events.

CCTV footage helps crack case

Police relied on CCTV footage from the surrounding areas and other technical evidence to trace the movements of the autorickshaw. After analysing the footage, investigators identified the vehicle and tracked down the आरोपी.

Basavegowda was subsequently arrested and is being questioned further.

Family informed, probe continues

Meanwhile, Kempamma’s family has been informed about her death. Authorities have registered a case and are continuing their investigation into the incident.

Police are also examining whether additional charges, including causing death by negligence and destruction of evidence, may be invoked against the accused.

Conclusion

The incident highlights the serious consequences of road accidents and the legal implications of attempting to conceal such घटनाएं. Police have urged motorists to report accidents immediately and seek proper medical and legal assistance instead of resorting to unlawful actions.
