The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has taken action against Shifa Clinic, levying a fine of Rs 20,000 for improper disposal of biomedical waste in a public space. The clinic was found guilty of discarding medical waste, including syringes and medication bottles, under the flyover along Pipeline Road in Vijayanagar 2nd Stage.
Stringent Rules in Place
Under the solid waste management rules, the BBMP has the authority to impose fines ranging up to Rs 1 lakh for littering or improper waste disposal. This includes violations related to public littering and mixing waste categories. Specific regulations govern bulk generators of biomedical waste, such as Shifa Clinic, mandating proper disposal through authorised vendors to safeguard sanitation workers and the public.
Enforcement Across Various Sectors
In another instance, Sri Banagiri Varasiddhi Vinayaka Temple in Ganesh Mandir also faced a Rs 20,000 fine for dumping plastic bags of waste in a public area. These actions underscore the BBMP’s commitment to enforcing waste management regulations across different sectors to maintain cleanliness and public health in Bengaluru.
