Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has announced that it will begin sealing non-residential properties with significant property tax arrears from December 1. BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath issued this directive during a meeting with senior officials, aiming to improve property tax collection and address unpaid tax concerns across the city.
This intensified measure is part of BBMP’s broader effort to recover outstanding dues. Girinath emphasized that properties with substantial arrears, especially those where owners have declared lower values under the Self-Declared Property Tax System (SAS) and later revised their declarations, would face action. He directed officials to take a targeted approach by focusing on zones with high delinquency.
The Chief Commissioner also highlighted the approaching expiration of the One Time Relief (OTS) scheme on November 30, which waives interest and penalties for defaulters. From December 1, the liabilities for unpaid property taxes will double, and the BBMP is working to raise awareness about this deadline. Defaulters are encouraged to clear dues under the scheme to avoid additional financial burdens.
Present at the meeting were senior BBMP officials, including Special Commissioner Munish Maunsil, Surallar Vikas Kishore, Dr. K. Harish Kumar, Avinash Menon Rajendran, and Preeti Gellot. Girinath advised these officials to enforce tax collection strategies at the sector level to enhance compliance and meet revenue targets.
This aggressive approach reflects BBMP’s commitment to addressing financial gaps and improving civic services in Bengaluru through a stricter property tax collection framework.
