The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) is preparing for a massive plantation drive aimed at creating a Guinness World Record by planting 15 lakh native saplings across Bengaluru on World Environment Day, June 5.

Officials said the large-scale initiative is being planned as part of efforts to tackle rising temperatures and the growing Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect affecting the city.

Thousands of volunteers expected

Speaking about the initiative, BDA Chairman N. A. Haris said the plantation programme may continue for nearly 10 days, although the majority of saplings would be planted on June 5 itself.

The BDA expects participation from nearly 50,000 to 80,000 volunteers, including students, NGOs, residents, and environmental groups.

Invitations have reportedly already been sent to schools, colleges, non-governmental organisations, and volunteer groups across Bengaluru.

Native saplings to be planted citywide

Officials said the saplings would not be limited to BDA-developed layouts but would also be planted in other parts of Bengaluru requiring green cover expansion.

The plantation drive will focus mainly on native tree species to improve ecological sustainability and long-term survival rates.

The BDA is also in discussions with multinational companies for financial support under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

Move aimed at reducing urban heat

Authorities said the idea for the massive plantation effort emerged amid increasing concern over Bengaluru’s rising temperatures and shrinking green spaces.

Experts have repeatedly warned that rapid urbanisation, concrete expansion, and loss of tree cover are intensifying heat retention across the city.

The initiative is expected to boost Bengaluru’s green cover while also creating awareness about environmental conservation and climate resilience.
