Bangalore: For the ruling Congress, Bellary will be the prime district on its development agenda, for now. The government will give special attention to solving the problems faced by the people in the district, which is considered  backward.

The government move comes in the wake of the people of Bellary standing by the Congress in the recent byelections to the Bellary Rural Assembly constituency, which was once the fiefdom of BJP MP B Sriramulu. Energy Minister DK Shivakumar was in charge of the Bellary elections.

Financial estimate

Addressing the media at the KPCC office in Bangalore on Monday, Shivakumar said the government had ordered a survey in the district by eight to 10 departments. “The exercise is to identify the problems of the people of Bellary. Once the survey is completed, the government will prepare a financial estimate from each department to ameliorate the people’s problems,” he added.

The minister said the exercise should not be branded a package for Bellary. The intention is to solve the problems of the people who have reposed their faith in the Congress, he said. Shivakumar said the government would shortly hold a ministerial meeting in Bellary to ensure that the ministers have a detailed look at the proposals, which may be required to develop the district.

He said the problems ranged from those pertaining to ration cards to power supply and the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj department. “Accordingly, we have identified certain ministers whose presence may be required in the meeting along with the chief minister in Bellary,” said Shivakumar.
