Bengaluru auto drivers are becoming social media stars and activists

A growing number of Bengaluru’s autorickshaw drivers are using social media platforms to create content and speak out on issues affecting their community. Many drivers are gaining significant followings on Instagram and Facebook, sharing everything from humorous skits to life experiences.

Parashuram, 31, a driver with 70,000 followers on Instagram (@parshuram_shatty), began creating content in 2019. He transitioned from TikTok to Instagram after the platform was banned in India. “I started making videos during the first lockdown out of boredom. My love for Kannada movies inspired me,” he says. Parashuram’s content mainly consists of funny skits and dialogues in the style of Sandalwood films. He even collaborates with fellow drivers, drawing inspiration from personal stories and those around him. His growing presence has led to brand promotions and affiliate marketing offers.

Azzu Sultan, known for teaching Kannada to his passengers, has 1.7 lakh followers on Instagram (@autokannadiga0779). He charges around Rs 30,000 per brand deal and avoids promoting betting apps. Sultan began on Facebook and later expanded to Instagram and YouTube, where he shares behind-the-scenes glimpses of his life as an auto driver. He works long hours, shooting and editing videos between rides.

Shivakumar, aka Sarathi Shivu, documents his life in his vlogs. Though he’s gained popularity quickly, with some videos reaching over 4 lakh views, he had to pause content creation after selling his auto.

While these drivers enjoy their growing social media presence, they also face trolling and criticism from fellow auto drivers. Some are upset by the content revealing earnings per ride. Nonetheless, the Bengaluru Auto Sene, an auto driver’s union, is also gaining traction online, using Instagram to raise awareness about issues such as inflation and road rage, while supporting drivers in need.
