Bengaluru: With concerns growing over the possible impact of the El Niño phenomenon on this year’s monsoon, the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has announced three major measures aimed at conserving water and protecting the city’s long-term drinking water supply.
BWSSB Chairperson Dr Manjula said the new directives are intended to encourage responsible water use, prevent wastage and strengthen Bengaluru’s water security in the face of uncertain rainfall.
Aerators now mandatory in all buildings
Under the new guidelines, the installation of flow restrictors (aerators) has been made compulsory in all residential buildings, apartments, commercial establishments, government offices, hotels and industries.
According to the BWSSB, aerators can reduce water consumption by 30 to 50 per cent without affecting the flow of water, making them an effective solution for improving water-use efficiency.
The Board said the decision is based on recommendations made in an Indian Institute of Science (IISc) report on sustainable water management.
Potable water barred for non-drinking purposes
The BWSSB has prohibited the use of drinking water for washing vehicles, watering gardens, cleaning roads and footpaths, construction activities and other non-potable purposes.
Instead, it has directed residents, institutions and businesses to use treated water or other suitable alternative sources for these activities wherever feasible.
The Board has also banned the use of potable water to fill both private and public swimming pools, making treated water the preferred alternative.
Heavy penalties for violations
The BWSSB has warned that violations of the new orders will attract a ₹5,000 fine.
Under the provisions of the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Act, 1964, the Board may also reduce water supply to the offending premises by up to 50 per cent. Continued violations will invite an additional penalty of ₹500 per day, besides legal action.
Appealing for public cooperation, Dr Manjula described drinking water as a precious natural resource and urged citizens to install aerators, avoid the misuse of potable water and actively participate in Bengaluru’s water conservation efforts to ensure adequate supplies in the months ahead.
