Bengaluru based scribe’s book on coffee in race for int’l honour

Bengaluru: A book on South Indians’ find, coffee, is the latest entry from India to the Gourmand International (Book) Award.

Bengaluru based journalist PT Bopanna, in his book titled ‘The Romance of Indian Coffee’, has strove to bring alive one of the essentials of South Indian culture, which is now vie for the top honours among coffee books from Brazil, France, China, Thailand and the US among others.

Originally hailing from the Indian home of coffee Kodagu, it was quite nature for Bopana to draw inspiration from coffee for his work. “My earlier works revolved around Kodagu, but with coffee, I found a subject which has a bigger appeal to it,” he said.

According to Bopanna, the book traces the history of coffee in India, its cultivation, favourable climate and other key aspects that makes coffee what it is.

There are entries from as many as 64 countries for the Gourmand awards, started in 1995 as a celebration of global cookbook and wine book publishing.

The final results will be announced on May 28 at Yantai, China.
