Bengaluru: A well-known independent bookstore in Bengaluru suffered heavy losses after intense rainfall triggered flooding on Wednesday, submerging a large portion of its stock and damaging thousands of books.
The Bookworm, located on the bustling Church Street, reported that between 4,000 and 5,000 books were lost after water entered the shop premises. Photographs shared by the store on social media showed books floating in murky floodwater, while hailstones were seen scattered outside the shop.
Sudden flooding causes major damage
The flooding occurred following heavy rainfall that lashed parts of Bengaluru, leading to waterlogging in several areas. The bookstore, situated at street level, bore the brunt as rainwater quickly accumulated inside, damaging shelves and stock.
The visuals shared online highlighted the extent of the destruction, with stacks of books soaked beyond recovery and the interiors of the shop inundated.
Timing worsens losses
The losses were compounded by unfortunate timing. According to the store’s proprietor, Krishna, the shop had recently stocked up on additional books in anticipation of the summer holiday season, which is typically a peak period for sales.
Much of this newly acquired inventory was among the damaged items, significantly increasing the financial impact on the small business.
Limited chances of recovery
Krishna said efforts are underway to salvage as many books as possible by drying them in sunlight. These salvaged copies may be sold at discounted prices.
However, a large number of books have been rendered unusable and will have to be discarded. The situation has been worsened by modern publishing practices, he noted, as many books printed on recycled paper are less resistant to water damage.
Illustrated titles such as Asterix and Obelix, printed on oil-based paper, were among those completely destroyed, as they could not withstand exposure to water.
Social media support pours in
The images shared by the bookstore triggered an outpouring of support on social media. Readers, customers, and well-wishers expressed sadness over the loss and extended solidarity with the store.
Several users encouraged the reading community to support the shop by purchasing damaged books, even in their current condition, to help the business recover from the setback.
Some also referenced similar incidents elsewhere, including flooding that affected book markets in other cities, where community-driven efforts helped booksellers recover losses.
Community-driven recovery hopes
Many supporters suggested organising initiatives similar to past events where flood-damaged books were sold at discounted rates, drawing large crowds and helping businesses regain footing.
Offers poured in from customers willing to buy soiled or partially damaged books as a gesture of support, underlining the strong bond between independent bookstores and their communities.
Conclusion
The incident underscores the vulnerability of small businesses to sudden weather events, especially in urban areas prone to waterlogging. While the financial loss is significant, the strong response from the reading community offers hope that the bookstore will recover with collective support and resilience.
