Commuters across Bengaluru are increasingly feeling the impact of rising fuel prices, with auto-rickshaw and cab fares witnessing a sharp increase over the past two weeks.

Fuel prices have reportedly been revised upwards four times since May 15, leading to higher travel costs both on app-based ride platforms and through offline auto services.

Many commuters claimed that fares during peak evening hours have surged by nearly 40 to 50 per cent, especially in busy commercial areas and airport routes.

Peak-hour fares shock commuters

A working professional travelling regularly between MG Road and Rajarajeshwari Nagar said that auto drivers who earlier charged between Rs 230 and Rs 300 are now demanding anywhere between Rs 700 and Rs 1,200 during rush hours.

Airport travel has also become significantly more expensive for passengers.

“Usually, we pay around Rs 600 for an airport drop-off, but recently I had to pay almost Rs 300 extra even after choosing the cheapest option across apps,” said Arfa Sulaiman, a resident of Jayamahal.

On Monday evening, cab fares from MG Road to Kempegowda International Airport reportedly ranged between Rs 750 and Rs 894 across multiple ride-hailing platforms.

Cab shortages worsen situation

Commuters and drivers say the issue has been further aggravated by recent rainfall and an ongoing shortage of cabs at airport pick-up points.

Drivers are reportedly avoiding airport trips due to strict airport regulations, waiting times and lower earnings compared to city rides.

The increasing fares have once again triggered discussions about Bengaluru’s growing transport challenges, with many office-goers expressing frustration over the rising cost of daily commuting
