Bengaluru: A simple gesture of kindness by a police officer in Basavanagudi has captured the attention of social media users after a stranded motorist shared the experience in a viral Reddit post.
The post, titled “You won’t believe what Bangalore Police did”, narrated how an officer from the Basavanagudi Police Station stepped in to help when a bike ran out of fuel right in front of the station late at night.
Bike stalls in front of police station
According to the user, they and a friend were returning from a restaurant when they realised their two-wheeler was running dangerously low on petrol. Hoping to reach the nearest fuel station, they continued riding, but the vehicle eventually came to a halt in the middle of the road — directly opposite the Basavanagudi Police Station.
“Last night, my friend and I were leaving a restaurant when we realised our vehicle was almost out of petrol. We thought we’d somehow manage till the petrol pump but obviously, the bike stopped right in the middle of the road, exactly in front of Basavanagudi Police Station in Bangalore,” the user wrote.
The duo initially feared they might be reprimanded or questioned for causing an obstruction on the road at night. Instead, an officer approached them calmly and asked what had happened.
Officer arranges petrol without hesitation
After the situation was explained, the officer reportedly did not scold the riders or make them feel uncomfortable. Instead, he called two individuals from inside the station and asked them to fetch petrol for the stranded bikers so they could continue their journey.
The user highlighted that what stood out most was the officer’s effort to overcome the language barrier. While the officer was not fluent in Hindi and the stranded motorist did not know Kannada, he attempted to speak in Hindi to ensure they felt at ease.
“The sweetest part? He didn’t really know Hindi, and I don’t know Kannada, but he kept trying to speak in Hindi just to help us feel comfortable. Such a small moment, but it meant so much. Really grateful for that kindness,” the post read.
The heartwarming account quickly gained traction on Reddit and other social media platforms, drawing widespread appreciation.

One user commented that while negative incidents often dominate headlines, many officers quietly extend help to citizens. “Yes, people are mostly helpful, but of course, the bad side gets more attention,” the comment read.
Another user recounted a comparable incident near Goraguntepalya, where a patrol officer personally fetched petrol in a bottle after noticing a motorist pushing a stalled bike.
Some users also encouraged the original poster to formally acknowledge the officer’s efforts. “Tag them on X and send them a thanks. They are active and it helps build the narrative that they are there to assist. Contrary to popular opinion, the Karnataka police has undergone many silent changes that have made them accommodating and receptive to us as citizens,” one comment stated.
Others admitted they had initially expected a negative outcome, particularly given common stereotypes about late-night police encounters. “Finally, a good story about the police at night. I was half expecting you to be harassed for roaming around at night and swindled for money. Humanity does exist after all,” another user remarked.
